Shopify product page checklist

By Lee ·

The product page is where many buying decisions are made. If someone has to scroll around looking for the size guide, the delivery cost or what's included, many will leave and compare elsewhere.

Use this checklist on your best-selling product first, then apply what you change to the rest of the store.

Photos and video

  • Show the product from every angle that matters, including scale and detail
  • Include photos of the product in use, so people can picture it in their home or on their body
  • Show everything that comes in the box
  • Keep the first image clean and recognisable, since it's also used in collections and search
  • Compress images before uploading, so the page loads quickly on mobile
  • Add short, descriptive alt text to each image

Title and description

  • Use the name customers search for, plus the detail that sets the product apart
  • Open the description with what the product is and who it's for
  • Use short sections or bullet points for specifications, dimensions and materials
  • Answer the questions your customer service team hears most often
  • Avoid copying the manufacturer's description word for word, since many other stores use it too

Options and variants

  • Make options clear, such as sizes with measurements and colours with swatches
  • Show which combinations are out of stock rather than letting people discover it at checkout
  • Update the photo when someone picks a different colour or style
  • If the product has many options, consider a product builder that walks people through the choices step by step

Price, delivery and returns

Extra costs such as delivery and fees are the most common reason shoppers abandon checkout in Baymard Institute's research. Near the price, show:

  • The full price, and any payment options you offer
  • Delivery cost, or how it's calculated, and estimated delivery times
  • Your returns policy in a sentence, with a link to the full version
  • Whether stock is available now, or when it's expected

Proof and trust

  • Product reviews, with photos if customers provide them
  • Guarantees and warranties
  • Answers to common objections, such as assembly, care or sizing
  • Contact options for questions, such as chat or email

Keep this close to the Add to cart button, where people are deciding.

Mobile layout

Many shoppers browse on phones. Check your product page on an actual phone:

  • The price and Add to cart button are visible without much scrolling
  • Options are easy to tap
  • Text is readable without zooming
  • Nothing spills off the side of the screen
  • Pop-ups don't cover the product as soon as the page opens

Speed and technical basics

  • Remove apps you no longer use, since many add code to every page
  • Check page speed on mobile and fix the largest images first
  • Make sure each product has a unique title tag and meta description
  • Use product structured data, which many Shopify themes include, so search engines can show price and availability

After the click

  • Test the full path from product page to checkout on mobile and desktop
  • Check the cart shows the right options and price
  • Set up a Klaviyo abandoned checkout flow for people who leave

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Shopify product description be?

Long enough to answer what buyers need to know before purchasing. Simple products may need a few lines. Complex or expensive products usually need more, organised into short sections so people can scan.

Should I show delivery costs on the product page?

Yes, where you can. People are less likely to abandon checkout when they already know the delivery cost and timing.

Do I need a custom Shopify theme for better product pages?

Not always. Many improvements, such as better photos, clearer options and visible delivery information, can be made within your existing theme. Custom development makes sense when your products need functionality the theme can't provide.

What's a product configurator?

A step-by-step builder that helps customers choose options, add-ons or bundles, often with a live price. It suits products with many combinations that a standard product page doesn't explain well.
